Multiple drivers caught for speeding and drug driving over weekend

Multiple road users have come police attention in the past week with licences suspended, charges laid, fines applied and vehicles seized.

On Saturday evening (18 July 2026), police intercepted a 38-year-old Bonython man in a silver Mercedes-Benz sedan in Fadden. Police enquiries revealed that he was disqualified from holding or obtaining a drivers licence and he then returned a positive indication to a prescribed drug. He was arrested and charged with drug driving and driving while disqualified and is set to face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

On Sunday (19 July 2026):

• A taxi with a driver and passenger onboard was spotted at 100km/h in the signposted 60km/h roadworks zone on the Monaro Highway. The 24-year-old driver from Wright was issued with a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by over 30km/h, incurring a $750 fine and 4 demerit points;

• Officers detected a black BMW SUV travelling at 131km/h on Gungahlin Drive, Aranda - 41km/h over the posted speed limit. The driver, a 39-year-old man from Ngunnawal was issued with a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/h, incurring a $750 fine and 4 demerit points;

• Just ten minutes later, police detected a blue Honda motorcycle travelling at 154km/h, on Gungahlin Drive. A 21-year-old Waramanga man had his licence suspended immediately for 180 days and he was issued with a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h incurring a $1891 fine and 6 demerit points;

• Police observed a red Volkswagen Jetta travelling closely to another vehicle on William Hovell Drive, Hawker and higher than the 60km/h limit in the roadworks zone. The 33-year-old Calwell driving tested positive to a prescribed drug and he had appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court last week where he was placed on a good behaviour order. He was charged with drug driving, speeding, follow vehicle too closely to stop safely, and breaching good behaviour obligations. He faced the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday (Monday, 20 July 2026)

• A blue Hyundai i30N was detected travelling at 158km/h on Horse Park Drive, Gungahlin, almost double the sign-posted speed limit. A19-year old Gungahlin man, who was on a provisional licence had his vehicle seized his licence suspended. He will be summonsed to attend the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

• A motorcycle rider on Barry Drive was observed riding at 138km/h in the 80km/h zone. The rider had only held his motorcycle learners permit for three months. He was issued an immediate suspension notice, a fine of $1891 and incurred six demerits.

These incidents across the weekend are in addition to:

• A 17-year-old p-plater that had his licence suspended and vehicle seized after being caught speeding 70km/h above the speed limit on the Tuggeranong Parkway on Saturday night.

• A 38-year-old City man who was arrested while allegedly driving unregistered, uninsured and while disqualified in Canberra's north on Friday.

• A 22-year-old woman who had her licence suspended after she was detected speeding by more than 60km/h on the Monaro Highway on Wednesday night.
