ACT Policing is reminding the community that holding on to firearms of a deceased family member may be illegal.

If a licenced firearm holder dies, family members must notify the ACT Firearms Registry as soon as possible after their death to make arrangements for any firearms to be legally held.

This may include the transfer of ownership to another licence holder, the temporary surrender to the ACT Firearms Registry (pending securing a licence) or the permanent surrender of the firearms. The firearms may also be sold to another licence holder.

Importantly, the deceased person’s family must advise the ACT Firearms Registry of their intentions and confirm arrangements for the legal possession of the firearms.

To notify the ACT Firearms Registry, call (02) 5126 9076 or email ACTFirearmsRegistry@afp.gov.au.

The Registry is open by appointment only, please ensure you contact the ACT Firearms Registry to organise surrender or collection.

When transporting, keep the firearm unloaded, in its case (or wrap it in a blanket), and transport securely in the boot of the vehicle. If transporting ammunition, it must be kept in a locked container separate from the firearms. In some cases, police may be able to attend a residence and remove the firearms for you.
