A 42-year-old man has been charged following a police pursuit involving an alleged stolen vehicle through Canberra's inner south this morning.
About 4:15am today (Thursday, 24 September 2026), officers observed silver Volkswagen Passat that was stolen from Lyneham in June (2026) travelling at excessive speed on Cotter Road, Weston Creek.
The vehicle performed a U-turn before continuing at high speed through Weston Creek and Yarralumla. Police will allege the driver repeatedly drove on the wrong side of the road, crossed median strips and failed to stop for police.
Police lost sight of the vehicle several times before relocating it in Yarralumla. When officers activated their emergency lights and sirens and directed the driver to stop the vehicle continued to accelerate and drive at speeds of up to 100km/h in 60km/h zones.
It is further alleged the vehicle was driven on the incorrect side of the road along sections of Novar Street and Cotter Road, causing other motorists to take evasive action.
The vehicle eventually stopped in Curtin about 4:30am, where the driver was arrested.
The man refused to undergo roadside drug testing, and police located several quantities of white crystalline substance suspected to be methamphetamine inside the vehicle.
The man, who was subject to a good behaviour order, will face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with aggravated furious driving, drive motor vehicle without consent, fail to stop vehicle for police, refuse to undergo screening test, refuse to provide oral fluid sample, and drive while disqualified.
