160 drivers have been caught as ACT Policing targeted impaired driving in August.

Across the month, ACT Policing targeted impaired driving using a combination of large scale, static operations and mobile patrols to conduct more than 24,000 breath tests and more than 400 drug tests.

72 drivers were found to have alcohol levels that exceeded their licence limits. 88 drivers were found to have prescribed drugs present in their system including cannabis, methylamphetamine MDMA and cocaine.

Officer in charge of Road Policing, Detective Inspector Mark Steel said he was alarmed at the sheer volume of impaired drivers on our roads.

“While this was a record month for tests, infringements and charges, it is a record that the ACT should be ashamed of. To have 160 drivers on our roads with drugs or alcohol in their systems is both alarming and disappointing,” said Detective Inspector Steel.

“We are a well educated population with everyone well aware of the dangers of driving impaired – but last month’s result shows how many people are prepared to put themselves, their passengers and other road users at risk. Simply – as a community we shouldn't be tolerating this behaviour.”

“Impaired driving remains one of the fatal five factors for serious collisions on our roads. As we head into spring and summer we urge all drivers to do the right thing. If you are going to consume alcohol or drugs – don’t drive.”
