A teenage boy has been charged following multiple burglaries at an aged care facility, including one where a security guard was threatened with a knife and machete.
Between December 2025 and March 2026, multiple burglaries occurred at an aged care facility and retirement village in Monash. The incidents were reported to police and Operation Rioni was established to identify those responsible.
In one incident, a security guard on patrol confronted three offenders when two produced a knife and machete and chased him, eventually knocking him to the ground and stealing his torch.
On 22 March, a black Nissan X-Trail was stolen from the retirement village and later crashed into a house in Gowrie. The male occupants fled on foot and threatened a bystander with knives when he attempted to intervene.
On 19 May, officers from ACT Policing’s Proactive Intervention and Diversion team executed a search warrant at a residence in southern Canberra and seized property stolen from the retirement village, including licence plates from one of the stolen vehicles.
A 16-year-old-boy who was subject to good behaviour orders was arrested and charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, and possessing a prohibited weapon.
Investigations into the identities of the co-offenders and the men involved in the stolen vehicle pursuit are ongoing.
