ACT Policing has charged a 30-year-old Hughes man following an investigation into an alleged blackmail, assault and aggravated robbery in Belconnen last month.

Police will allege the man made threats to a second man in late April (2026), demanding money and attempting to coerce him into making payments by threatening to make false reports to police.

It is further alleged the second man transferred a sum of money in an attempt to stop the harassment.

On 27 April 2026, the second man was asked to meet the man and another unknown man at his Belconnen apartment. The two men allegedly attended the second man's residence where a confrontation occurred.

During the incident, police will allege the 30-year-old man produced a firearm to intimidate the second man. It is further alleged the second man was then assaulted to the point of unconsciousness.

While unconscious, police will allege both alleged offenders stole multiple items including a motorbike, mobile phones, jewellery, footwear and a drone. The total value of the property is estimated to be more than $20,000.

Following the incident, the second man sought medical treatment and later provided a statement to police.

Yesterday (Monday, 25 May 2026), ACT Policing executed a search warrant at a residence in Hughes and seized a number of items, including property believed to be connected to the alleged offences and a taser.

Police will also allege the man attempted to conceal his mobile phone during the execution of the warrant.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Tuesday, 26 May 2026) charged with joint commission blackmail, aggravated robbery (in company), choking a person insensible, concealing evidence and possess a prohibited weapon without authorisation.
