A 27-year-old Waramanga woman has been charged after allegedly deliberately lighting a number of grass fires in Fisher and Chifley yesterday.

About 3:50pm (Wednesday 22 July 2026), police were called to Chifley following reports that a woman had deliberately lit a number of grass fires.

Police allege that the woman used a gas-powered blowtorch to deliberately light at least four fires on Badimara Street in Fisher and Waldock Street in Chifley.

A member of the public witnessed the woman light the fires and attempted to stop her. The woman allegedly assaulted the man as he attempted to detain her.

Officers located the 27-year-old woman in Chifley and she was arrested.

Two of larger fires allegedly lit by the woman were extinguished by ACT Fire and Rescue.

The member of the public attended hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The 27-year-old woman will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Thursday, 23 July 2026) charged with act to cause public alarm and common assault.
