A 23-year-old Duffy man – who is subjected to good behaviour obligations – has been charged after allegedly stealing a vehicle in Hawker before leading police on a pursuit through Canberra yesterday evening.
About 6:45pm yesterday (Friday, 3 July 2026), a white Volkswagen Golf hatchback was allegedly stolen from Hawker Shops.
Police will allege the vehicle owner confronted two people inside the Golf before it was driven away. The owner sustained injuries to their leg, hands and head and lost consciousness. They were treated at the scene by ACT Ambulance Service paramedics before being transported to hospital.
About 7:35pm, Road Policing officers located the stolen vehicle travelling on William Hovell Drive in Belconnen and followed it for a short period of time. Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens directing the driver to pull over and the driver allegedly failed to stop and accelerated away.
Police engaged a pursuit where the Golf allegedly drove at excessive speeds through a number of Canberra suburbs, committing several traffic offences and placing other road users at risk.
After initially losing sight of the vehicle, police re-located it in Narrabundah where a tyre deflation device was successfully deployed on Hindmarsh Drive before the vehicle came to a stop in Garran.
The 23-year-old man and his partner were arrested at the scene. The man was conveyed to City Police Station where he was subsequently subjected to a breath analysis, which returned a positive result.
A check on the man also confirmed he had never held a driver’s licence.
The man is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with drive motor vehicle without consent, fail to stop for police, aggravated dangerous driving, drink driving and driving unlicenced. The woman was released without charge.
