A 38-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly broke into multiple storage cages at a retirement village overnight.

About 3am (Friday, 31 July 2026), a resident of a retirement village in Ainslie notified police of an intruder in the basement carpark.

Police arrived and observed multiple storage cages with damaged locks and doors. In one storage cage, officers found the 38-year-old man.

He was arrested and a search of his belongings uncovered a knife, pry bar, gloves, and other tools police will allege were for theft.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court today, charged with two counts of unlawful possession of stolen property, and one count each of burglary, going equipped for theft, and possessing a knife without a reasonable excuse.
