ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a collision between a car and an e-bike in Melba last night, which resulted in serious injuries to a 12-year-old boy.

About 9pm yesterday (Monday, 16 February 2026), police were called to a collision between a white Mitsubishi Triton utility and a black e-bike at the intersection of Verbrugghen Street and Chinner Crescent in Melba.

Three young people riding on the e‑bike were treated at the scene by ACT Ambulance Service paramedics. One of them, a 12‑year‑old boy, was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Police are aware the boy and two others were seen riding around Belconnen earlier that evening. Officers are seeking anyone who witnessed the riders or has dashcam footage from the area prior to the collision to come forward.

Detective Inspector Mark Steel warned the community about the dangers and significant safety risks associated with e‑rideable devices such as e‑scooters and e‑bikes.

“Just as when you’re driving a car or riding a motorcycle, the same road rules apply for e-rideable devices. Please be aware and stay alert,” Detective Inspector Steel said.

“Without proper protective clothing, helmets, and safe riding behaviour, riders risk being involved in high‑speed collisions and suffering severe injuries or death."

Anyone who can assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers via the Crime Stoppers ACT website, quoting 8305655. Information can be provided anonymously.
