A 22-year-old Palmerston man has been caught by police allegedly driving 150km/h in an 80km/h speed zone.
Members from Gungahlin Police Station were conducting speed enforcement on Gungahlin Drive at about 11pm yesterday (Thursday, 27 August 2026) when they observed a gold-coloured Mazda 3 allegedly travelling above the posted speed limit.
Police will allege the vehicle was travelling at 150km/h in an 80km/h speed zone.
Police stopped the driver and he was subjected to a roadside breath test where he returned a positive result. Police checks also revealed the car he was driving was unregistered.
The man’s licence was immediately suspended, suspending his right to drive in the ACT for 180 days.
He has been summons to appear before the ACT Magistrates court at a later date charged with drink driving, using an unregistered motor vehicle and exceeding the speed limit.
Officer in Charge of Road Policing, Detective Inspector Mark Steel said police were disappointed people continued to speed on ACT roads.
“Yesterday officers had to deliver the message to someone that their loved one had died on that exact stretch of road,” Detective Inspector Steel said.
“For someone to then be caught spending on that road later that day, it beggars belief. When you speed you are not only putting your life at risk, but the lives of every other road user at risk as well.”
“We are urging all drivers to slow down, obey the road rules and help keep everyone safe on our roads.”
