A 34-year-old Symonston man will face court charged with multiple driving offences after a pursuit in south Canberra early this morning.

About 5:10am today (Thursday, 9 April 2026), police patrolling on Melrose Drive in Phillip observed a dark blue Mazda CX9 driving through a red light at the intersection with Eggelston Crescent.

Police followed the vehicle and activated their emergency lights and sirens, but the driver failed to stop and accelerated away.

Officers pursued the vehicle through Chifley and Waramanga, with the driver at one stage leaving the road and travelling along the green belt next to a cycle path.

The driver then drove onto the Tuggeranong Parkway before allegedly doing a U-turn in front of oncoming traffic. The vehicle then veered off the road and onto a nature strip, before coming to a stop after wedging itself in a storm water drain.

The 34-year-old male driver, who was on bail for similar alleged offences, was arrested at the scene and transported to the ACT Watchhouse.

He will appear before the ACT Magistrates Court today (Thursday, 9 April 2026) charged with failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and using number plate issued for another vehicle.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed or has dashcam footage of the incident or vehicle to come forward.

Anyone who can assist police should provide their contact details to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote 8352128. Information can be provided anonymously.
