A 33-year-old man will face court after he allegedly assaulted his former partner and was caught drug driving last night, leading to his arrest.

Police will allege between August 2025 and March 2026, the man assaulted his former partner, including strangling and kicking her in the head while she was pregnant.

The incidents were reported to police and officers began looking for the man.

About 7pm on Wednesday, 8 April 2026, police conducting random drug and alcohol testing in Yarralumla observed a grey Ford Ranger travelling on Novar Street.

Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens but the driver failed to stop, driving on the wrong side of the road before eventually stopping on Cotter Road.

The 33-year-old man, who is an unlicensed driver, was subject to a roadside drug screening test, which returned a positive result for methamphetamine.

He was arrested and charged with offences relating to the alleged assault of his former partner, including choking/suffocating/strangling another person and aggravated assault, and driving offences including failing to stop for police, drug and reckless driving.
