Man charged after brandishing a sword at woman and child in the City

A 51-year-old man from Reid has been charged following an incident where a sword was used to allegedly threaten a woman in Glebe Park in the City on Friday night.

At around 8:30pm on Friday (24 April 2026), a woman contacted police to report a man in Glebe Park had allegedly pointed a samurai sword at her and her child.

Police attended and located the man with the sword in his possession, the man was directed to drop the sword and he immediately complied.

The man was also observed to be riffling though an open parcel on the ground. Police later identified this parcel as being stolen.

Police also located a shopping bag which contained keys, jewellery and a massage gun. The items were seized as suspected stolen property.

The man was arrested and transported to the ACT Watch House before being sent for a mental health assessment.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Wednesday 29 April) charged with possessing an offensive weapon and unlawful possession of stolen property.

Enquires are continuing to identify the owners of the suspected stolen property and further charges may be laid.
