ACT Policing is disappointed by the behaviour of Canberra drivers after people were caught street racing, speeding, drink and drug driving during National Road Safety Week.
More than 90 speeding fines were issued and 16 people were charged with drink driving during National Road Safety Week, which ran from 11 to 18 May 2025.
On the first day, police conducting speed enforcement on William Hovell Drive in Whitlam detected a 43-year-old man driving at 110 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.
The driver – who was travelling with his 9-year-old child in the car – tested positive to the presence of drugs and alcohol, and police checks revealed his licence was suspended.
About 9:30pm on Monday (12 May), police observed a Mazda and Volkswagen driven by two 17-year-old boys street racing along Gungahlin Drive in Mitchell. Both boys were issued with an infringement notice and incurred three demerit points.
Three drivers were caught drug driving on Wednesday (14 May) in Symonston, Weston and Red Hill. All three will be charged with drug driving at a later date.
Five people were caught drink driving on Saturday night (17 May) in Gungahlin, including one woman who was caught twice.
Detective acting Superintendent Mark Steel said police wanted drivers to take responsibility for their actions on our roads.
“We want to see zero deaths on ACT roads and we need the community’s support to achieve that," Det. a/Supt. Steel said.
