A 17-year-old boy will face the ACT Childrens Court after allegedly stealing cigarettes and brandishing a knife at a member of the public last week.

About 5pm on Friday (31 January 2025), a masked male jumped the counter of a Kippax supermarket and stole a large quantity of cigarettes and tobacco before fleeing.

Police allege when a member of the public attempted to intervene, the boy pulled a large knife from his bag and threatened them.

Following an investigation, officers from the Proactive Intervention and Diversion Team executed a search warrant at the boy’s home this morning (Friday, 7 February 2025) where they discovered a knife, clothes matching the clothing worn by the offender and packets of cigarettes.

The teenager, who is currently subject to a good behaviour order for other matters, was arrested a short time later in Coombs and has been charged with theft and possessing an offensive weapon with intent.

Police are asking the member of the public who confronted the boy as he fled the supermarket to come forward.
