Police seeking witnesses to chemical incident in City nightclub

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses after a chemical substance was allegedly released inside a City nightclub early this morning.

About 1:30am this morning (Sunday, 17 August 2025) police were alerted to an incident inside a licenced premises on Alinga Street, where an unknown chemical substance was allegedly released.

When police arrived, many patrons were exiting the premises with breathing difficulties along with eye and skin irritation.

Police evacuated the premises and ACT Fire and Rescue attended to perform a HAZMAT response.

With the help of witnesses, police quickly identified a 20-year-old woman as a person of interest.

She was located by police a short time later and placed under arrest.

A search of her possessions allegedly located a can of oleoresin capsicum spray inside a black handbag. Police believe this was the substance released.

The woman has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon with intent and acting causing public harm. She will appear in court at a later date.
