Two men will face the ACT Magistrates Court today after allegedly stealing a car from an apartment complex yesterday.

About 5.15am (Tuesday, 22 October 2024), the 33-year-old and 53-year-old men were captured on CCTV attempting to gain access to vehicles in an underground carpark of an apartment complex in Dickson.

A short time later, they gained access to a blue Kia Cerato, which they subsequently took off with.

As they were attempting to exit the carpark, a man attempted to position himself in front of the vehicle to prevent them from leaving, however they allegedly accelerated towards him and swerved, before proceeding to depart the area.

About 6.30am, the owner of the Kia Cerato contacted police to report the vehicle as stolen after noticing it was gone.

Yesterday afternoon, police were conducting patrols in the vicinity of Ainslie when they observed the two men walking in the same clothing that they were wearing in the CCTV from the morning.

Police approached the two men and located a number of items that did not belong to them, including numerous bank cards and airpods. They were subsequently arrested.

The two men were charged with several offences including joint commission aggravated burglary, and taking a motor vehicle without consent. The 33-year-old was also subject to a good behaviour order at the time.

Police are appealing to the Canberra community for assistance in locating the blue Kia Cerato sedan, bearing ACT registration YMH40L. The vehicle is suspected to be in the vicinity of Ainslie, Braddon, or the City.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the Kia is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference number 7880677.
