Two men will face the ACT Magistrates Court today after allegedly stealing a car from a residence over the weekend, with one of the men also assaulting a police officer.

In the early hours of yesterday morning (Sunday, 8 December 2024), a white Mercedes Benz S400 was stolen from a residence in Gungahlin.

About 10.35pm last night, police observed the Mercedes parked in O’Connor, with three men located inside the vehicle.

Police instructed the men to exit the vehicle, at which time they all forcefully pushed past police and took off on foot.

One of the men – a 19-year-old – also allegedly struck a police officer in the face in order to further evade apprehension.

A short time later, police located the 19-year-old – who was subject to bail conditions at the time of the incident – in the backyard of a nearby property where he was arrested. He has been charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent and assaulting a police officer.

A 31-year-old man that was also in the Mercedes was located hiding in a shed where he was also arrested. He has been charged with riding in a motor vehicle without consent.

The third man is yet to be located, and anyone with information in relation to his identity is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website quoting reference number 7921181.

Investigations are ongoing in relation to the incident and further charges are anticipated.
