Two drivers lost their licence yesterday after one was caught speeding and the other fled a Random Breath Testing station.
About 7.40pm last night (Wednesday, 18 December 2024) the driver of a black Mazda 3 was subjected to a roadside breath test at a RBT station in Bonner, which was positive for alcohol.
At this time, the driver accelerated away from the RBT station and was observed by police travelling at approximately 160km/h in an 80km/h zone through the intersection of Horse Park Drive and David Walsh Avenue in Forde.
Police located the vehicle stopped a short time later at an intersection in Throsby, where the driver was subsequently arrested.
He was transported to City Police Station, where he returned a breath analysis of 0.121 - more than twice the legal blood alcohol limit.
The driver was served with an immediate suspension notice – suspending his right to drive in the ACT for 90 days – and was charged with driving a motor vehicle with alcohol in breath, failing to stop for police, and dangerous driving.
Later the same evening, police were conducting patrols along Horse Park Drive in Kenny when they observed a black Volkswagen Jetta overtaking other vehicles at a high speed.
Police conducted a speed check on the vehicle and observed the Volkswagen to be travelling at 146km/h in an 80km/h zone.
A traffic stop was initiated and an 18-year-old provisional licence holder was identified as the driver with two passengers in the vehicle.
When asked why he was driving over the posted speed limit, he stated ‘that it was stupid and he was showing off’.
Officers issued the 18-year-old with an immediate suspension notice, and he also received a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, which attracts a penalty of $1841 and the loss of six demerit points.
Drivers are reminded that double demerit points are in effect from Friday, 20 December 2024 and will be in place until Wednesday, 1 January 2025.
