A 30-year-old Kambah man has been charged with multiple driving offences after allegedly stealing a car, failing to stop for police, and driving erratically throughout Canberra’s south.
About 8.20am yesterday morning (Monday, 23 December 2024) police attended a residence in Coombs following reports that a white Hyundai i30 had been stolen from an apartment complex.
A short time later, the Hyundai was seen at a service station in Chisholm, where the 30-year-old allegedly became aggressive with staff. He then allegedly took off at speed.
About 8.50pm last night, police were conducting patrols in Kambah when they observed the Hyundai - with registration plates that were also allegedly stolen earlier in the day - sitting stationary.
Police activated their lights and siren, however the driver evaded police by driving on a footpath.
About 5.10am this morning (Tuesday, 24 December 2024) police observed the Hyundai in Greenway and once again activated their lights and siren, directing the driver to stop.
The man turned onto Scollay Street, Greenway against a red light, continuing past Tuggeranong Police Station and driving through another red light.
The vehicle then continued along Erindale Drive up to the intersection of Sulwood Drive, crossing onto the incorrect side of the road numerous times.
It was further observed reaching a speed of approximately 100km/h in an 80km/h zone, continually crossing to the incorrect side of the road.
As the Hyundai approached the intersection of Athllon Drive and Beasley Street, Farrer, police successfully deployed a tyre deflation device.
The vehicle continued along the wrong side of the road before coming to a stop in the middle of the road on Yamba Drive.
Police approached the driver and he was subsequently arrested.
The 30-year-old man – who was subject to bail conditions at the time of the incident – has been charged with two counts of failing to stop a motor vehicle for police, driving a motor vehicle without consent, reckless driving, unlawfully possessing stolen property, and breaching his bail. He will face the ACT Magistrate’s Court today.
Police would also urge anyone with dash-cam footage of the Hyundai driving erratically yesterday or in the early hours of this morning to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference number 7934089.
