Woman charged after allegedly assaulting police officer

A 40-year-old woman will face the ACT Magistrates Court today after allegedly assaulting a police officer at a shopping centre in Canberra’s south over the weekend.

About 7.30pm on Saturday evening (24 August 2024), police attended the Calwell Shopping Centre following reports of a disturbance involving several people.

Officers were speaking to a witness when a 40-year-old woman allegedly ran at an officer and punched the officer in the face.

The 40-year-old woman was arrested and conveyed to the ACT Watch House where she was charged with assaulting a frontline community service provider.

Officer in Charge of Tuggeranong Police Station, Inspector Rod Anderson, said violence against police is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“This assault that occurred over the weekend on a police officer who is going about their work to protect the community is appalling,” Inspector Anderson said.

“Police officers, like all front line responders, deserve to go to work and return home without fear of being assaulted.

“Anyone who chooses to engage in this violent behaviour can expect to be charged, and face the full force of the law.”
