Every police response starts with communication. As a Radio Operator or Call Taker with ACT Policing Communications, you'll play a vital role in keeping the Canberra community safe. Working in our 24-hour communications centre, you'll be the critical link between members of the public, frontline police officers, emergency services and other government agencies.
Whether you're answering a Triple Zero (000) emergency call or 131 444 non-emergency calls, supporting frontline officers over police radio, or helping coordinate a response to a critical incident, your decisions and actions can make a real difference when people need help most.
What does a Radio Operator or Call Taker do?
ACT Policing Communications operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, providing communications and operational support across Canberra and surrounding regions.
Call Takers
As a Call Taker, you are the first point of contact for people seeking police assistance. You will answer emergency (000) and non-emergency (131 444) calls, gather and assess critical information, and help determine the most appropriate response. This role requires professionalism, clear communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure while supporting members of the community during challenging situations.
Radio Operators
As a Radio Operator, you play a vital role in coordinating police resources and supporting frontline operations. You will manage radio communications, provide timely and accurate information to police officers, monitor and record incidents using specialist systems, and assist with resource deployment. Your work helps ensure effective policing responses and contributes to the safety of the ACT community.
Who we're looking for
You don't need previous policing experience to succeed in this role. We're looking for people who can remain calm under pressure, communicate clearly and confidently, and make sound decisions with limited information. Successful applicants will demonstrate empathy and professionalism when supporting members of the public, work effectively as part of a team, and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. The role also requires strong attention to detail, a commitment to accuracy, and the ability to quickly learn and use new technology and operational systems.

Working in a 24/7 Communications Centre
ACT Policing Communications operates around the clock, every day of the year. These positions are based in Canberra, ACT and are performed at the communications centre. Team members work on a 24/7 rotating roster that includes day, evening and overnight shifts, as well as weekends and public holidays. These positions are not remote or work-from-home roles due to the operational nature of the work.
Minimum requirements
To be considered for future opportunities, applicants must:
- Be an Australian citizen.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be able to obtain a Negative Vetting 1 (NV1) security clearance.
- Successfully complete recruitment assessments, including suitability and psychological assessments.
